Italian Grand Prix – Monza Free Practice 3

September 12, 2009

It rained overnight at Monza, so the track was green for this session. The BBC Five Live team were in good form, as ever, lending a friendly atmosphere to what will surely be one of the wildest qualification sessions later today, where Crofty estimates the Q2 field could be covered by as little as 1/10th of a second.

This morning, however, once again belonged to the Force Indias. Adrian Sutil was on top of the time sheets for much of the session, trading places with Lewis Hamilton. Vitantonio Liuzzi proved that not all Italian test drivers are a waste of teams’  money as he was always within touching distance of Sutil. Things looked brighter for the Brawn boys, ending the session second and fourth, split by BMW’s Nick Heidfeld.

The picture was not so rosy for Red Bull’s Mark Webber and Sebastian Vettel, Webber missed the first half hour of the session whilst his car was worked on, and only ran 13 laps. Vettel, using the last new engine in his season allocation, ran 16 laps. They finished in 17th and 18th. Giancarlo Fisichella had a short trip to the medical centre after introducing his car to the tyre barrier at speed, but he was fine. The car needs some major work before qualifying though. He ended the session at the bottom of the time sheets, having run only 10 laps and is likely to struggle to get into q2.
