Italian Grand Prix – Monza Friday Practice 1

September 11, 2009

The F1 circus is in Monza this weekend for the Italian Grand Prix, and while most of the attention is focussed on the ongoing Renault controversy, the story of weekend is surely that of Giancarlo Fisichella, making his debut for Ferrari in front of the tifosi.

He seems to be making race engineer Rob Smedley far happier than Luca Badoer ever did. Now we just have to hope for some more comedy radio.

On the timesheet, Fisichella showed he was up to the task, putting in the 8th fastest time, sandwiched between championship contenders Jenson Button and Mark Webber, after a slow start when he didn’t get on too well with the tyres. He switched to the softs, while most stayed on the harder compound. Ferrari team mate Kimi Raikkonen was 10th. McLaren and Force India dominated the session, with Fernando Alonso, Nick Heidfeld and Sebastien Buemi also putting in strong showings.
