Dancing With The Stars Season 9 – The Pairings

August 25, 2009

ABC yesterday released the official pairings for the new season of Dancing With The Stars. The lineup, barring any pre-show injuries is:

Louis Vito and Chelsie Hightower – she did well last season with Cowboy Ty, managing to coax some form of performance from him towards the end of his run. But can she work her magic with a teenage snowboarder?

Kathy Ireland and Tony Dovolani – Tony really grew on me last time round, but models historically do not fare that well, so is there likely to be much opportunity for shirtless Tony this season?

Ashley Hamilton and Edyta Sliwinska – As I said before, Ashley seems to have a good attitude, and he’ll likely enjoy Edyta’s ever-decreasing costumes, but they might just end up having too much fun.

Tom DeLay and Cheryl Burke – It appears to me that ABC do not wish Cheryl to become the first pro to get three glitterballs. Either that, or she told them she only wanted to do a few weeks!

Kelly Osbourne and Louis van Amstel – Poor, poor Louis. He seems such a nice guy, and he is a truly talented choreographer, but he must have some bad karma. He’s tweeting their training too!

Macy Gray and Jonathan Roberts – Jonathan always comes across as a nice guy, but I’m not sure he has what it takes to win, and I think he may struggle to help Macy appear graceful, which is often an issue for taller females.

Aaron Carter and Karina Smirnoff – I expect Karina will not stand for any messing around from Aaron, and may get some decent performances from him, but I think the votes will be for her, not him.

Natalie Coughlin and Alec Mazo – Alec has not made a final since the very first season, but he has an Olympian this time, so could it be his year?

Chuck Liddell and Anna Trebunskaya – Anna last appeared with Steve Guttenberg, and did a decent job with him, if she can coax some graceful performances from Chuck, I think they could do well.

Debi Mazar and Maksim Chmerkovskiy – Maks has had two terrible seasons, first the injury to Misty May-Treanor, who he was working well with, then getting Denise Richards last year. I hope Debi can do him justice.

Joanna Krupa and Derek Hough – Derek never seems to draw bad partners, but it remains to be seen if this model can be another Brooke Burke.

Mya and Dmitry Chaplin – Dmitry did an outstanding job last year, with a short notice change of partner, ending up with Holly Madison. In his first season, it was very harsh to give such a nice guy such an awkward celeb. The downside for him this year is that Mya may be seen as a ringer.

Mark Dacascos and Lacey Schwimmer – Lacey’s first season with Lance was excellent, she brought some amazing quirky touches to their dances, but last year with Steve-O, they hyped each other up too much and forgot to work on the dances. A more disciplined celebrity may help her concentration.

Michael Irvin and Anna Demidova – Anna won the new pro competition last season, and proved herself a match for Maks when teaching. She’s off to a good start and ex-NFL players traditionally have plenty of support.

Melissa Joan Hart and Mark Ballas – Someone at ABC seems keen for Mark to become the first three-time winner on the face of this pairing. They must surely be early favourites.

Donny Osmond and Kym Johnson – Kym has been partnered with older celebs four times, most successfully in Season 3 with Jerry Springer, she has also been runner up twice with younger partners. This one may not require much work on her part as being an Osmond guarantees passage through about the first six weeks.
