European Gran Prix – Valencia Free Practice 3

August 22, 2009

Saturday morning practice, and it’s hot in Valencia. Unfortunately, on about the half hour mark, Sebastian Vettel’s engine failed in fairly spectacular style, leaving a trail of oil for some distance, including the apex of one turn. Session was duly red-flagged, whilst the Valencian marshalls tried every tool in their shed to clear the oil. We had dust, we had leaf blowers, you name it, they tried it. It wasn’t that successful, but given the alternative was the picturesque crane in the background, it was ok.

Cars were let back out with 5 minutes to go. This meant it was a mad scramble, and consequently, the time sheets are interesting. Not particularly reliable, mind you, but will be good reading for fans of Sutil, Nakajima, Kubica or Kovalainen. Somehow, Grosjean managed to finish faster than Alonso, but Luca Badoer stayed firmly glued to the foot of the table. Not heard that he got any speeding fines today, either.

Crofy and Ant were on fantastic form, especially given the long gap in action. Looking forward to seeing how the break has treated the BBCF1 team at 12.10 today.
